Other than that feature, the following description applies to both cameras. Focus modes for the 3 point auto-focus system include Single shot auto-focus (focus priority), AI Servo (Predictive continuous auto-focus), plus a mode whereby the camera will start out in Single shot and if it senses subject movement, automatically switch to AI Servo to track the subject at up to 2.5 frames per second. The camera also supports manual focus. Exposure modes are program mode with manual shift override, aperture and shutter priority AE, depth of field AE, and metered manual. Metering modes include six-zone evaluative, center weighted averaging, and partial (a sort of semi-spot mode that encompasses the central 9.5% of the viewfinder. The Elan II/IIE have additional sophisticated functions too numerous (and a little complicated) to mention here. Obtain an instruction manual to fully appreciate this camera. EOS RT - 1989-94 - The EOS RT is essentially an EOS 630 minus the "Programmed Image Control" function, but with an interesting plus. The RT has a fixed pellicle mirror. 30% of the available light, and the viewfinder image, are reflected upward to the prism. The mirror never moves, the image is actually shot right through the mirror, with no time lag for mirror retraction, and no "black-out" in the viewfinder during the exposure. Also missing are the noise and vibration of the mirror flipping up and then back down at the end of the exposure. EOS 1 - 1989-94 - The EOS 1 was Canon's entry into the pro market to combat the Nikon F4. Devotees favor the Canon usually for one of two reasons: the EOS 1 has a faster auto-focusing speed, and mounts Canon's world class L-series EF lenses. Auto-focus modes include one-shot (focus priority), or continuous (servo) with focus prediction at speeds up to 2.5 frames per second (standard built-in motor drive) or up to 4.5 fps with the optional power drive booster. The camera also supports manual focus. Exposure modes are program (w/shift), aperture and shutter priority AE, depth of field AE, and metered manual. Metering modes include six-zone evaluative, center weighted averaging, and partial (5.8%) or spot (2.3% of the viewfinder). Shutter speeds range from 30 seconds to 1/8000, plus Bulb (which includes an elapsed time indicator). Flash sync is 1/250. Additional Features: auto-bracketing, multi-exposure, depth of field preview, exposure compensation, interchangeable focusing screens, self timer, TTL flash metering, mirror lock-up, auto-fill flash, second curtain flash sync, auto DX coding of film speed with manual override, and a built-in motor drive, with auto film loading and rewind, and mid-roll rewind. Again, as with the Elan II/IIE, the EOS1 has additional sophisticated functions too numerous (and a little complicated) to mention here. Obtain an instruction manual to fully appreciate this camera. EOS 10s - 1990-94 - Auto-focus modes include one-shot (focus priority), or continuous (servo) with focus prediction. Autofocus on the 10s uses Canon's "Multi-Basis" three sensor system. The camera also supports manual focus. Exposure modes are program, aperture and shutter priority AE, depth of field AE, and metered manual. Metering modes include eight-zone evaluative, and partial. Shutter speeds range from 30 seconds to 1/4000, plus Bulb (which includes an elapsed time indicator). Flash sync is 1/125. Additional Features: built-in flash, auto-bracketing, multi-exposure, depth of field preview, exposure compensation, interchangeable focusing screens, self timer, TTL flash metering, mirror lock-up, auto-fill flash, second curtain flash sync, auto DX coding of film speed with manual override, and a built-in motor drive (5 FPS), with auto film loading and rewind, and mid-roll rewind. EOS 1n - 1994-Present - An EOS 1 with: even faster autofocus (especially with moving subjects) and the same 5 sensor AF system as the A2 (without the eye-control AF of the A2E). Other differences are as follows: Metering modes include sixteen zone evaluative, center weighted averaging, and partial (9%) or spot (2.3% of the viewfinder), in addition there is a 3.5% spot pattern that is attached to the active AF sensor. Consult a complete version of the operating instructions to access all functions/features. EOS 1n-RS - 1996-Present - An EOS 1n with the fixed pellicle mirror feature of the EOS RT (see the description of the RT above for further description). EOS 3 - 1996- Present - Currently Canon's top performer in autofocusing. The EOS 3 features Canon's third generation of it's Eye Controlled Focus technology. It has 45 autofocus sensors in a 15mm x 8mm oval linked to 21 exposure sensors making it Canon's most sophisticated camera yet in both the autofocus and exposure methods. The autofocus performance is enhanced to the point that it will operate in the Predictive autofocus mode at up to 4.3 FPS (standard), or up to 7 frames per second with the Power Drive Booster PB-E2. Metering modes are 21 zone evaluative metering, partial metering (8.5%), spot metering (2.4%) with the sensor locked to the active focusing point, and centerweighted averaging. Exposure modes consist of Program AE with shift, aperture and shutter priority AE, Depth of field AE, TTL program flash AE, A-TTL program flash AE, E-TTL program flash AE (with the 550EX flash only), and metered manual. Shutter speeds range from 30 seconds to 1/8000, plus Bulb (shutter speeds are adjustable in 1/3 stop increments). Flash sync is at 1/200. Additional Features: auto-bracketing, multi-exposure, depth of field preview, exposure compensation, interchangeable focusing screens, self timer, TTL flash metering, mirror lock-up, auto-fill flash, second curtain flash sync, auto DX coding of film speed with manual override, and a built-in motor drive, with auto film loading and rewind, and mid-roll rewind. Many more features and functions apply, see the owners manual for complete details. EOS Rebel - 1990-91 - Auto-focus modes include one-shot (focus priority), continuous (Predictive AI servo), or a combination of the two. The camera also supports manual focus. Exposure modes are program (w/shift), aperture and shutter priority AE, depth of field AE, and metered manual. Metering modes include three-zone evaluative, center weighted averaging, and partial (9.5%). Shutter speeds range from 30 seconds to 1/1000, plus Bulb (which includes an elapsed time indicator). Flash sync is 1/90. Additional Features: exposure compensation, exposure preview, , an exposure/focus lock, multi-exposure, self timer, TTL flash metering, auto DX coding of film speed with manual override, and a built-in motor drive, auto film prewind (ala the 700/750/850) with auto film loading and rewind, and mid-roll rewind. EOS Rebel S - 1990-91 - Same features as the Rebel plus built-in flash. EOS Rebel II - 1991-94 - The original Rebel with a few changes: top shutter speed increases to 1/2000; quieter film transport; and a "soft-focus" setting whereby the camera double exposes the frame, slightly defocusing the lens between exposures (two settings, weak and strong). EOS Rebel S-II - 1991-94 - A Rebel II with a built-in flash. EOS Rebel X - 1994-95 - Lighter weight than the previous Rebels, due to the increased use of plastic, and a change from an all glass pentaprism to a roof prism. Three sensor wide area autofocus in which the center sensor is sensitive to both vertical and horizontal subjects, while the two outboard sensors are sensitive to horizontal lined subjects. The soft focus feature of the Rebel II is gone, but a mid-roll rewind feature has been added. Metering has been upgraded to a six-zone evaluative system, tied in directly to the autofocus system. The X also has a partial area metering, somewhat like a spot meter, although covering a larger area. This is the first of the Rebels to offer an optional remote shutter release, although it is electronic, and not cheap. EOS Rebel XS - 1994-95 - The Rebel XS is a Rebel X with a built-in pop-up flash. Three-zone four-segment TTL flashmeter (very similar to the one found in the EOS-1n). The pop-up flash has a Guide Number of 39 at ISO 100, and covers a 28mm lens. It also has a lowlight focus assist beam, and a red-eye reduction light (both of questionable value). EOS Rebel G - 1995-1999 - An updated version of the Rebel XS, the Rebel G includes a built-in flash; the 3-point AF system (from the Elan II); auto-exposure bracketing, in half stop increments, up to ± 2 stops; a new mirror coating technology that enhances the brightness of the roof-type prism. EOS Rebel 2000 - 1999-Present -
